There's more to coconut oil than being a mere ingredient for cooking.

After years of receiving brickbats as a supposedly questionable food item, coconut oil it seems, is in for a renaissance. Yes, the "oil of life" has since been rediscovered as truly healthful for the body --- regardless of what other "oil" advocates might say. However, coconut oil never really disappeared as it still remains one of the most economically important oils in the world up to the present.

Nonetheless, coconut oil has also evolved. Unlike before when it was marketed as a slightly yellowish and smelly (in a good way!) liquid the sanitary standards of which are questionable; today's coconut oil has since benefited from improved technology, marketing and packaging.

This is evident in the virgin coconut oil that is becoming increasingly popular. The cold-press method which is now being utilized in the production of most virgin coconut oil products, retains most of its vitamins, minerals and nutrients, thus enabling coco oil to become even more healthful. Also, a lot of therapeutic and even folk-medicinal claims about virgin coconut oil are surfacing. Although they have yet to be medically validated, testimonies as to virgin coconut oil's efficacy are slowly gaining adherents.

Here's a list of the purported benefits of virgin coconut oil as gleaned from the book The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil by Bruce Fife N.D. The book states that both medical research and clinical observations have shown that medium-chain fatty acids from coconut oil may provide a wide range of health benefits.
