Actually,
both French terms are salads. However, the salad
simple consist mostly of tossed, greens that have been torn and shredded
into bite-size pieces, while the salad
compose, is a salad with meat, vegetables, fish and eggs.

Caesar Salad Roman, American or Mexican in provenance?

American and Mexican. It seems that an Italian restaurateur created the dish in
Tijuana, Mexico; where an American tourist tasted it and popularized it. A
simple Caesar salad consist of romaine lettuce tossed in a dressing of mustard,
lemon juice, Tabasco sauce and olive oil. It is then sprinkled with Parmesan
cheese, anchovies (drained), egg (coddled) and croutons. It is customary to rub
the salad bowl with salt and garlic.
Is
a Chef's Salad the same as Caesar Salad?
The
answer is a definite no. The Chef's Salad is a salad compose so to speak, since
it has meat. It's a combination of chicken, tongue, ham and Swiss cheese; all in
equal proportions. These ingredients are customarily julienned, tossed in
vinaigrette dressing and served with a bedding of greens.
What
is a salad nicoise?
It
is a traditional French salad that initially, was meant to be a rough and
robust, country salad. However, the chef's hand has since changed it's a
little bit less than refined nature. Essentially, it consists of hardcooked
eggs, anchovy fillets, black olives, and tomatoes, with garlic in the dressing.
