Heart disease begins in childhood. Whether or not your family has a history of heart disease, it's important to help your children reduce future risks. A few changes in your family's lifestyle like increasing physical activities and developing good dining habits can help avert this ailment. Below are some suggestions from the Clara Ole Kitchen Club.

  1. Baking, broiling and grilling are the best ways to cook meat. This eliminates the saturated fat found in most oils needed in fried foods, and in the process, reduces the fat in the meat. A good marinade brings out the meat's flavor. For an easier time in the kitchen, try Clara Ole ready to use sauce, with variants especially made for Tapa, Tocino, and Barbecue dishes.

  2. Should oil be vital in the recipe, go for olive oil. This type cuts heart risk up to percent.

  3. Use less salt, start by giving the salt one less shake over the saucepan or your plate. Experiment with other flavors like herbs to enhance meals.

  4. Aside from being healthy, it is economical to serve tomato sauce-based meals like mechado or caldereta as the sauce extends its flavor to Filipino staple, rice. Clara Ole Tomato Sauce comes in 115 gms., 250 gms. and 1 k. pack for various uses.

  5. Eat at least two servings of fish a week. A lot of families find it hard to feed fish to kids. Parents then need to be more inventive, incorporating fish in meals like pasta, a good source of fiber, which does wonders for your digestion. Experiment by adding different fish and vegetables to Clara Ole Spaghetti Sauces that come in different flavors like Sweet-Style, Italian-Style, Three-Cheese, Mushrooms, Bacon & Cheese and Onion & Garlic.

  6. Lower your cholesterol content. Limit your intake of eggs to no more than three per week. Switch from butter to margarine.

  7. Cut down the intake of high fat desserts such as ice cream on pies. Opt for low fat muffins and cookies and spread some jam for the sweet flavor. Clara Ole makes a variety of jams and jellies like the traditional Orange Marmalade, Strawberry, Pineapple and Mango to more innovative concoctions like Mango-Pineapple jam and Guava jelly. Each tablespoon has 50 calories and does not have any calories from fat.

  8. You can also eat fruits for dessert. An old saying goes "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." This is actually very real since an apple or 12 ounces of apple juice lowers the risk of a heart attack or stroke in half.

  9. But the proof is in the food you prepare. Try this simple and easy recipe to aid you in preparing hearty, economical yet healthy meals for the family that can be served for dinner or a snack.
